TV Commercials on Mute

[My first post at 100.bloggers.]

Try this: Turn off the sound during television commercials and, based on what you see, name two different products or services that the ad could be selling. A sports drink ... or financial advice? A new car ... or viagra? Until they pop their logo on-screen it's really hard to tell a lot of the times.

I play a similar game: I try to spot the commercials in which it's possible that the actors might have NO IDEA WHATSOEVER what product their commercial is selling.

One example is Barq's Root Beer: A job applicant is talking to his prospective new boss, Mr. Dumas, and calling him Mr. Dumb-Ass -- then the announcer says, "Think that's thick-headed?? You should see our root beer!"

I could just see the actors, filming this scene in which there are no root beer related activities at all, saying, "Um, what product is this for?" and the director says, "Hmm, I'm not sure, I'll have to get back to you on that ..."

There are lots of examples like that out there; see how many you can spot ...
